In my practice, I see people who are suffering from a wide array of afflictions, and almost every single one would benefit from more restorative sleep.  Who among us can say that we could not use more restful, restorative sleep?

We heal when we sleep. Our cells regenerate when we sleep. We grow when we sleep. When we sleep, we let go into a vast and deep sea of endless possibilities. Sleep is necessary for life.  And as we sleep, so shall we wake....

This fall, I will be offering an immersion into the Sounder Sleep™ system.

We know that for habits to change, we often need daily, or - nightly - support.  We often need someone holding our hand, saying, yes, you can do this, you are doing this, we are doing this.  In this immersion, I will "hold your hand" and guide you in a practice designed to downregulate your nervous system and promote restful sleep.  You may find that waves of sleep arrive as we practice. You may find that the practice tunes your system such that when it is time to sleep, you are able to sleep.

What is Sounder Sleep?

The Sounder Sleep System™ is a powerful method designed to train (retrain) us to enter into profound states of rest, and, when needed, into deeply restorative sleep.

Developed by Michael Krugman, a long-time Feldenkrais practitioner and a student of yoga, qi gong, and meditation, who went through a period of severe insomnia despite doing all the "right things" to promote good sleep, and in his quest to find a drug-free approach to help himself, he developed this unique and elegant system that is easily learned and applied, with the explicit aim of lulling us into deep states of rest, and when needed, carrying us into sounder sleep.  

The method involves the use of simple, small, specific movements, practiced slowly, with awareness, harmonized with the breath, that help to shift us from states of yang that many of us get stuck in - where our systems are "on on on," when we are taking care of this and that, running through the to do list, jumping from one task to the next, and even when we are supposedly relaxing, finding our minds caught in worries and planning and replaying and regretting and ruminating... into states of yin, where our systems slow down, and where deep rest and healing occur. 

This shift in our nervous system, from excitatory states of being to inhibitory states of being, enables us to enter into states of profound mental, emotional and physical rest. In life, we need both!  Yin and Yang.  We need to be awake and alert, and we need to sleep and be at rest.  Each of these states offers its own gifts. In our modern world, however, many of us spend too much time in yang states, and as a result, we feel chronically tired, worn out, anxious, "stressed," unable to be fully present to appreciate our life.  We may have difficulty bringing ourselves to "unplug" and truly rest and receive the restoration that comes from deep sleep. When we are unable to shift in and out of states of yang and yin as needed, and are stuck in yang, we miss out on all the treasures that are available to us when we slow down and enter into the vast sea of yin that exists within. 

The Sounder Sleep System™ gives us access to this deep resource.  It helps to promote restorative sleep, and in doing so, it helps to promote a more deeply satisfying experience of our wakeful life as well.
